Life is about learning. Sometimes the learning is from experience and sometimes it is in school. I have had 54 years of experience in life and now I take it back to school.

With the retirement age reaching seventy, I have about fifteen years to work. Although others my age are retiring, I had a late start, so I need to keep moving forward.

In recent years, I have had some attempts to find a career change that seemed like a waste of time. What I have learned is that there was nothing wrong with me. I just needed to be in a professional environment. I also have to feel that I make a difference.

I have been a substitute teacher for about a month and I love it. I’m not stressed, I don’t have to worry about co-workers and make a difference.

As a substitute teacher, I follow the lesson plan left by the teacher. I have the opportunity to try all the different grades. I leave with a smile on my face every day. I have discovered that I enjoy special education more. I even enrolled in pre-algebra for summer school to review my math skills. I need to have confidence to help students in math. Soon, I will have to learn to use their iPad programs.

A lot has changed since I was young. The technology is new. Schools have become targets of violence by unstable people who have access to weapons and social networks. The southwest has become predominantly Spanish speaking.

Still, some things are better. Teachers treat students with respect that did not exist in my parents’ generation. More services are being implemented. The new buildings allow a more pleasant atmosphere. Although I am not up to date with technology, it does help teachers track student progress.

I reviewed a program in which you can prepare to become a certified teacher by committing to teach in a low-income area and obtain forgiven student loans by fulfilling the commitment. I am working on the prerequisite courses to apply. I would like to teach special education at the primary level. This would require a focused life change.

We’ll see what happens, but even if I don’t enroll in the program, I would still be a happy substitute teaching the rest of my work days. I hope that as children become familiar with me in the community, doors will open to make a difference.
