It seems to me that the correct word is “cup”… but I also know that “cup” is also translated as “cup”, and to me they are very different words. A mug (for me) always always **always** is designed for hot drinks and usually for sitting at home or in a restaurant.
It’s made of ceramic and almost always has a handle (unless you’re referring to a “travel mug,” which can look quite different, but still holds hot beverages). A cup (for me) can contain anything. You may have a plastic cup that can hold water but not hot drinks.
I know that “glass” is appropriate for anything made of glass, and I know that “cup” is appropriate for anything with a stem (in English we would call it “wine glass”).
But could anyone help me understand if there is a specific word in Spanish just for ceramic mug with handle? What if I should be using a different word than “cup” to refer to a plastic cup? Edit: Thanks for all the responses! I made a diagram to summarize…does it look good? [https://imgur.com/a/kKvN21t](https://imgur.com/a/kKvN21t)
