I'm Conor I'm from the US I've been learning Spanish for a really long time now I'm not claiming to have the one true plan for learning there are many approaches that can work but it really helps to have a realistic plan especially when you are starting out or when you are feeling stuck and that's what this is what I'm going to share here goes from beginning to more advanced but the advice that you're going to hear throughout will apply to you regardless of your level in one way or another one important note is that it's really easy to watch a YouTube video and then do nothing with it I do that all the time and that's why I decided to put all the advice in this video into a simple blueprint that you can print out and follow throughout the year so if you want to take action on this video you can download that for free at the link in the description below phase one in your learning is all about preparation this is easy to skip you might feel inclined to skip it but without it you probably won't stick with it I know this from experience because I've learned a few languages but I have tried and failed to learn many more the reason that happens usually is because I've started without a strong reason without a real burning desire to learn it without that I tend to just give up once I am a few months in so for you you need to figure out why you want to learn regardless of where you are in your Spanish right now figure out why you want to learn and write it down and put it somewhere really obvious when it comes to your goals I suggest focusing goals on the action and not on the result so rather than I want to know a thousand words or I want to speak conversational Spanish in 6 months make your goal I want to spend at least 15 minutes with Spanish every day this month and at the end of the month you can reassess speaking of 15 minutes I suggest setting lower expectations not because you can't do it but because you know usually when people manage to learn Spanish quickly it's because they dedicate an enormous amount of time to it or they already have experience with another romance language but if you are a person with a busy schedule and other interests don't make it your goal to learn Spanish quickly you know make it your goal to learn Spanish well you can make progress but like all good things learning a new language takes time so set the expectation with yourself that you are in this for years otherwise you'll be in you'll be frustrated in 6 months when you see another video about how somebody supposedly got fluent in 30 days in the flu free blueprint that goes with this video you will have prompts that get you thinking about all these things phase two now on to the learning itself in the early stages that means building a foundation and then Keeping the Faith keeping it fun when you realize you know just how long this journey is I'll address that second one in just a minute first about the foundation I wouldn't start with grammar that's where most courses and books and other things start uh but instead I prefer to use grammar as a tool to understand things rather than the core of my learning more on that in a little bit since your learning habit might be new I think it's best to ease into the Habit so focus on something that's flexible like an audio program and a a vocabulary build that you know is on your phone for audio I think programs like pimsler Spanish pod 101 language transfer those are all great CU they are flexible and effective and easy to listen to on the go for your vocabulary at the start and also later on it can be useful I like clo Masters 500 most common words or one of their other kind of starter decks I like Clos Master because it's low Frills it has no distracting ads it uses space repetition it has tricky sentences even from the beginning uses audio and other features that really make it uh you know easy to focus and easy to learn regarding Keeping the Faith and sticking with it for the long run you know one thing about Spanish is that the more you learn the more you realize there is left to learn uh and that's why it's really important to focus on keeping it fun throughout the entire process by building Spanish into your life you know you can do this through music TV shows with subtitles even if you can't understand them yet and to just look at the entire process as a process of discovery and uncovering a new language rather than a giant list of words and grammar to memorize you know you're uncovering new language and new knowledge and that's an amazing thing and in all phases of your learning it's really good practice to use what you know on your own even in little ways you can do this at the start by making short sentences with the things that you learn looking around trying to say whatever you can reading things aloud and just generally being curious about the Spanish that you come across phase three is all about comprehension and I think this can go from you know months two to maybe six but in reality it continues throughout the length of your entire learning process because the core of your learning in my experience is building your comprehension and you build your comprehension by building your vocabulary there are a lot of ways to do this and by listening to things that are a challenge but not impossible and three this something that has really helped me listening while reading your goal during this comprehension phase is to listen to Spanish actively near your level for around 30 minutes a day you know two 15 minutes works great listening actively means things like taking notes listening more than once watching with subtitles and then without things like that whatever it is you are doing it with your full focus and this comprehension building is your main focus again this is not the only way to learn but in my experience and in the experience of a lot of my students it's a really effective one use your listening as your source of new vocabulary too and try to make sentences several sentences a day with new words that you come across another important part of comprehension is training your ear by learning about Spanish pronunciation it's a pro part of the process that is so overlooked and skimmed over but the reality is it makes a huge impact not only on your communication and speaking confidence but also on your comprehension because when you train your ear to pick out the sounds of Spanish and be more used to them and get used to things like how words link together and connected speech your comprehension goes way up I built a comprehensive pronunciation course that has already helped hundreds of of Learners with this and you can check that out in the description box if you are interested phase number four is speaking and this can overlap with the previous phase depending on your preferences you know some people say speak from day one others say don't speak at all for months until you've had thousands of hours of comprehensible input and both can work but personally I prefer a more in between approach by that here's what I mean use your Spanish out loud on your own from the very beginning just saying whatever you can even if that's just individual words primarily because it's a good habit to be in once you have a more solid foundation you can ease into speaking by speaking on your own this helps you iron things out without somebody staring at you and it's also just a good thing to do throughout the length of your learning when you feel ready to speak with someone else you can schedule regular speaking sessions on a platform like iie that's the one that I've used the most and I prefer this because it's less Hit or Miss than the free exchanges that you that you might find and it lets me schedule more conveniently plus you are paying someone to basically sit there and be patient with you which is really nice so you don't have to worry about you know making somebody else um you have to wait while you find your words to get more out of your conversation sessions whether they are with a tutor or just a friendly partner you can do things like prepare topics in advance you can start by being the one asking the questions rather than being the one answering them so the question the pressure isn't all on you you can try cross talk which is where the other person speaks inpan Spanish and you reply in English so you're each speaking your native language but listening to the other person speaking their native language you can ask them to send you some questions in advance so that you can prepare and while you're doing this while you're having conversations every week with somebody you can continue to speak to yourself every day these days you can use AI to give you both speaking prompts and feedback on your speaking I made a video on that recently and I will put a link to that in the description box below phase five in your Spanish learning is the long game at this point you already have a strong Foundation you're building your comprehension and some speaking skills and you are moving more into solid intermediate territory and almost everybody gets stuck here at some point so when you do focus on what I call I are you I for immerse surround yourself with as much Spanish as you can repeat so listen to something read something watch something multiple times this is something that is seriously undervalued among most Spanish Learners and use it use what you have been watching or listening to or reading as the source for your conversation topics both with yourself and with your conversation partners and tutors you may have noticed that I haven't mentioned grammar a whole lot in this video that's not because I think grammar is bad but it's because I don't recommend structuring your learning around grammar instead focus on discovering the language uncovering new things being curious and use grammar as a tool to help you do that so for example when you don't understand something do a quick grammar detour to learn why XYZ is said that way then return to your focus you know immersion growing your vocabulary listening using what you learn having conversations grammar is a much bigger topic that I will go into more detail on in a future video so subscribe if you want to see that a few more big skills that you're going to need to keep going accept ambiguity when it comes to understanding you know throughout this whole process there are going to be lots of things that you don't understand and that is it's important to be okay with that because otherwise you will get really hung up on the little details and not be able to see you know the forest for the trees when it comes to your listening and your reading primarily related to that focus on understanding things through context not isolated lists so this applies to both vocabulary and grammar that's really important and third keep it fun if you hate what you're doing it's important to stop that immediately because hating what you're doing is really the biggest risk to your progress cuz it's what's going to make you want to stop learning if you apply the advice in this video to your learning over the next year you won't be fluent overnight or in 30 days or in 6 months but you will look back in 12 months time and be genuinely proud have and impressed with how much progress and how much you have learned in only a year to take action on this video remember to download the free blueprint that goes with it and to start practicing your Spanish right now watch this video next ...
